TMA100 TURNTABLE AMPLIFIER
This is a turntable magnetic pickup pre-amplifier with some added features.
The amplifier accepts standard RCA input connectors and provides standard RCA output connectors.
There is sufficient gain to provide a nominal 1/2 volt output level to drive a sound system.
Four controls are provided, Volume, Balance, Low Tone and High Tone. These controls allow
adjusting the turntable to closely match the levels and sound of a systems other sources.
There is a 1/4 inch stereo phone jack monitor output on the front panel that may be used as an additional
output or use to plug in a stereo headset, 250 ohms or higher, for auditioning or private listening. This
feature allows using the turntable without a sound system if desired.
The output stage is a 12AU7 in a cathode follower configuration. The 12AU7 is able to supply enough
current to drive a 250 ohm or higher stereo headset to a moderate listening level directly from the cathode.
The output is coupled through a low impedance, low loss capacitor blocking DC from reaching the
headset. The output level into a 250 ohm headset is moderate but sufficient loudness for normal
listening. Listening test were conducted using ™KOSS MV1 Stereophone's.
There is no negative feedback used, the amplifier has a very open warm sound. Distortion measurements vary
depending on the brand of tubes used. Since there is no distortion canceling negative feedback in any of the
circuits, the amplifier will take on the character of the type or brand of tubes used. Distortion is second
harmonic dominant.
Construction is point-to-point wiring typical of the style used in classic hand wired vacuum tube audio
equipment. The tubes are visible through a perforated cover. The tube cover serves to shield the
pre-amplifier tubes from hum and noise pickup and also to provide protection from touching the hot
tubes.
Front and rear panel lettering is engraved, the front panel lettering is filled in with paint.
Wires, including shielded wires, come pre-cut to length and stripped. The bulk of the wiring is teflon
insulated for long life and resistant to melting while soldering. The shielded wires and some component
wires are not teflon insulated.
The kit comes with detailed instructions and plenty of pictures to illustrate and guide parts placement.
The assembly instructions comes printed in a binder that allows removing pages if desired. Assembly
instructions are also provided on a CD in pdf format.
