TMA100 TURNTABLE AMPLIFIER

This is a turntable magnetic pickup pre-amplifier with some added features.
The amplifier accepts standard RCA input connectors and provides standard RCA output connectors.
There is sufficient gain to provide a nominal 1/2 volt output level to drive a sound system.
Four controls are provided, Volume, Balance, Low Tone and High Tone. These controls allow adjusting the turntable to closely match the levels and sound of a systems other sources.
There is a 1/4 inch stereo phone jack monitor output on the front panel that may be used as an additional output or use to plug in a stereo headset, 250 ohms or higher, for auditioning or private listening. This feature allows using the turntable without a sound system if desired.
The output stage is a 12AU7 in a cathode follower configuration. The 12AU7 is able to supply enough current to drive a 250 ohm or higher stereo headset to a moderate listening level directly from the cathode. The output is coupled through a low impedance, low loss capacitor blocking DC from reaching the headset. The output level into a 250 ohm headset is moderate but sufficient loudness for normal listening. Listening test were conducted using ™KOSS MV1 Stereophone's.
There is no negative feedback used, the amplifier has a very open warm sound. Distortion measurements vary depending on the brand of tubes used. Since there is no distortion canceling negative feedback in any of the circuits, the amplifier will take on the character of the type or brand of tubes used. Distortion is second harmonic dominant.
Construction is point-to-point wiring typical of the style used in classic hand wired vacuum tube audio equipment. The tubes are visible through a perforated cover. The tube cover serves to shield the pre-amplifier tubes from hum and noise pickup and also to provide protection from touching the hot tubes.
Front and rear panel lettering is engraved, the front panel lettering is filled in with paint.
Wires, including shielded wires, come pre-cut to length and stripped. The bulk of the wiring is teflon insulated for long life and resistant to melting while soldering. The shielded wires and some component wires are not teflon insulated.
The kit comes with detailed instructions and plenty of pictures to illustrate and guide parts placement. The assembly instructions comes printed in a binder that allows removing pages if desired. Assembly instructions are also provided on a CD in pdf format. SAMPLE TMA 100 INSTRUCTIONS pdf file.

New vacuum tubes are guaranteed to meet manufacturers specifications for 90 days from date of purchase, except for breakage or when damaged by operation outside manufacturers specified ratings.

Tubes sold by PHILLO are manufactured in China and are the same type supplied with PHILLO products. All vacuum tubes are tested and come with emission readings as tested on a Hickock 800 tester.

• Matched indicates tubes that have been tested and selected for matched gain between sections. These are best for use in phase inverter circuits where each half of the tube drives an output tube grid. Check for availability.

•• Matched Pair indicates a pair of tubes that have been matched for gain for use in push-pull output stages. Check for availability.

Operating characteristics vary between manufacturers and may produce a different sound depending on the circuit they are used in. Sound is a subjective matter and varies from person to person. Although the tubes from China have performed well, there is no guarantee implied how tubes purchased from PHILLO will sound in your equipment.

PHILLO will keep vacuum tube prices as low as possible so you can economically keep your tube equipment operating. Prices may vary depending on suppliers, always check for current prices.

PHILLO Warranty

Vacuum tubes included with PHILLO kit products come with an extended warranty and are guaranteed to meet or exceed PHILLO product specifications for a period of one year from date of purchase.
Kits purchased from PHILLO are guaranteed to meet or exceed product specifications for a period of one year from date of purchase.
Kits, or other products, purchased from PHILLO that are assembled by PHILLO are guaranteed to meet or exceed product specifications for a period of three years from date of purchase with the exception of vacuum tubes, vacuum tubes are guaranteed as described above.
Should a product fail to perform as outlined in this warranty, PHILLO will either repair or replace the product as will be determined by PHILLO. Kit assembly instructions include troubleshooting procedures. Warranty includes parts and labor.
Harmonic content of vacuum tubes varies from manufacturer to manufacturer leading to a preference of the sound produced by a particular tube. Any brand of vacuum tube may be used in a PHILLO product as long as it is the same type and type specification. It should be noted that some tubes have a higher distortion content than others and may result in distortion levels higher than specified for a PHILLO product. The one year extended vacuum tube warranty described above only applies to tubes supplied with PHILLO products.

Hickok Tube Tester

All vacuum tubes sold by PHILLO are tested on a dynamic mutual conductance type Hickok 800A tester, checks tubes under simulated operating conditions. Test readings come with each tube purchased.

WHY VACUUM TUBES

Vacuum tubes are from the golden age of high fidelity and the component high fidelity system. It was a period of striving for great sound with high quality equipment enjoyed by Hi-Fi enthusiasts.
High fidelity got a boost shortly after 1945 when Harry F. Olson presented the results of his listening experiments. Mr. Olson's experiment, involving a small audience and an acoustic filter, proved that when given the choice people prefer wide response and low distortion.
In the late 1960's, most everyone was switching from vacuum tube to solid state transistor equipment. Some musicians started to note that there seemed to be an unnatural sound with the solid state equipment. Russell O. Hamm conducted psycho-acoustic experiments and discovered there was a difference in distortion content between vacuum tubes and solid state equipment. His findings were presented in 1972 at the Convention of the Audio Engineering Society, New York.
Vacuum tubes provide high fidelity sound with a warmth that makes listening to music a pleasure. Although the technology is old, vacuum tube amplifiers provide excellent response with soft distortion characteristics.

Although printed circuit boards make wiring easier, the heat from vacuum tubes tend to make printed circuit boards brittle and the copper foil to come loose over time. Also, point-to-point wiring using terminal strips emulates classic vacuum tube equipment.

These kits all require the use of a hot soldering iron and appropriate care must be taken. A neat un-cluttered work area arranged for easy safe assembly will help prevent accidents. Always keep small children away.

In general these kits are designed for those 18 years and older. Abilities vary from person to person and it is up to the purchaser to determine if a kit is age appropriate.

These kits use power supply voltages in the range of 250 volts to 500 volts. The kits use assembly procedures that present the safest method of assembly if the assembly instructions are carefully followed.

Good soldering technique is vital to safe and successful kit assembly. All kit instructions come with a guide for soldering.
For the novice builder who has never soldered, it is recommended that you practice soldering before assembling your kit. A good quality 35 watt soldering iron such as a Weller WP35 will give the best results.

WHO IS PHILLO?

PHILLO is a small business started by a 35 year broadcast engineering veteran with over 40 years of vacuum tube experience. The goal of this business is to provide vacuum tube kits that are as close as possible to the style of kits available in the 1950's and 1960's. The name PHILLO was picked because it is a simple unique name and is registered as PHILLO LLC. To help keep prices as reasonable as possible, these kits will use mostly standard electronic parts.
Primarily intended for North America, these kits operate on 120VAC 60HZ power and come with a standard North American 3-prong plug. This is also compatible with a few other countries but operation outside of North America may require a voltage converter.

KIT DIFFICULTY SCALE
